Biographie
Vahdah Olcott-Bickford (17 octobre 1885 — 18 mai 1980) nait Ethel Lucretia Olcott, à Norwalk, Ohio. Elle se marie deux fois et décède sous le nom de Vahdah Olcott-Bickford Revere.
Sa famille déménage, à Sorroco puis à Los Angeles lorsqu'elle a 3 ans. Elle prend ses premiers cours de guitare à 8 ans. À 9 ans elle rencontre le guitariste George Lindsay, qui deviendra son professeur et avec qui elle entretiendra une correspondance jusqu'à la fin de sa vie. Vers 1903 il lui présente Manuel Y. Ferrer, à Berkeley, chez qui elle va vivre et poursuivre la formation. M.Y. Ferrer décèdera brutalement un an plus tard. À son retour, elle publie sa première pièce, Theme for variations on "Nel cor più non mi sento". En 1914 elle emménage à New York où elle donne concerts et cours.
Elle fonde la American Guitar Society à Los Ageles en 1923 et enseigne au Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and Arts et dans son salon de musique à Hollywood Hills où elle promeut le jeu sans ongles. Au fur et à mesure des années, elle se construit une immense bibliothèque comprenant manuscrits originaux, partitions, magazines et correspondance concernant la guitare et autres instruments affiliés.
Elle décède à Los Angeles, et toute sa collection sera transférée à la California State University, à Northridge et sera à la base du International Guitar Research Archive (IGRA).
