Matías de Jorge Rubio ”. In the prologue of this edition, revised by Pedro Chamorro we can read this : “The “ 24 Grandes Estudios ” is a pedagogical work of enormous significance
for bandurria players who will be able to learn with them technical abilities from the 19th century, indispensable today for a good performance on Bandurria.
Matías de Jorge Rubio was also a guitarist, as Prat and Saldoni state in their respective dictionaries. We only know 4 of his compositions for guitar “Introduction a la Jota Brillante
”, “Fandango”, “La Guasona” (American Dance) and “La Graciosa” (Havanan Dance); but there is no doubt, he was a great bandurrist, just because of the publication in 1862 of the
“Novísimo metodo de Bandurria” (first elitist vindication of bandurria, where he includes other studies as well as “Tema con Variaciones” that require a high technical
level) as well as these “24 Grandes Estudios”, devoted to the master Francisco Asenjo Barbieri (1823-1894), coetaneous of Matías de Jorge Rubio, who was an important composer, musicologist,
bandurrist and friend of the author (as we can infer from the personal dedication on the existing copy in the National Library of Spain”).
