C’est à l’adolescent de retour à sa maison ancestrale de Carlsbad, en Allemagne que Dorn étudia la guitare avec son oncle, James Dorn, corniste et guitariste connu à l’époque (il a fait une tournée en Angleterre en 1832, et une autre aux États-Unis en 1846).
Charles Dorn était connu en tant que compositeur et arrangeur ainsi que guitariste virtuose.
